The Look for Less: $224 Chanel Eye, $68 for Cheaper Versions

I recently got my makeup done at the Bloomingdales Chanel counter. I love learning new techniques when getting my makeup done, however I do not always like the price tag. As a luxury brand, Chanel is expensive- the eyes were $224 alone and the whole face would have been over $1000! In terms of results, I was very impressed with the eye makeup; the rest of the products were fair at best. My experience wearing Chanel makeup further proves my point that luxury does not equate to quality- buying Chanel makeup means you are buying the Chanel label, the beautiful packaging, and the feeling of luxury you get when you apply an expensive product.

While the colors presented below may not match your skin tone, all of these products offer multiple colors and can be customized to fit your needs. For example, the NYX Professional Wonder Pencil comes in light, medium and dark.

On the left: Chanel Les 4 Hombres palette ($62) in Mystic Eyes. On the right: Hard Candy Mod Quad palette ($7.99) in Pink Interlude.
While the Hard Candy shadow requires a wet brush application, I think the result is actually better- the intense color payoff has a brightening effect.
Instructions for a Day Look:
1. Wet the brush and apply top left color to highlight the brow bone and around the tear ducts.
2. Wet the brush and apply the light pink color over the entire lid.
3. Wet the brush and apply the brown or the dark purple in the crease of the eye.
Instructions for a Night Look:
4. After applying all the first steps, using a wet smudge brush, smoke out top and bottom lash line with the dark purple color. For added drama, continue to smoke out the lash line. Finish with a black liner in the water line. If you want to go all out: spend an extra few seconds curling your lashes, apply lash primer, extra mascara, then apply false lashes. For instructions on applying false lashes, see: https://theverypolishedbeauty.com/2019/07/14/story-of-my-first-time-wearing-false-eyelashes.
On the left: Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof eyeliner ($33). On the right: Lune + Aster ($22) gel eyeliner.
The Lune + Aster eyeliner outperforms any drugstore or luxury brand alternatives because gel application is extremely smooth and the line is extraordinarily crisp due to the fine point. I find this pencil is very easy to use; a beginner could master the perfect line after one application. From the Chanel makeup artist, I learned to only apply eyeliner on the top lash line and the importance of applying eyeliner to the water line. Applying eyeliner on the lower lash line with a pencil results in eyes appearing smaller and tired.
On the left: Chanel Le Crayon Khol Intense Eye in 69-Clair ($30). On the right: NYX Professional Wonder Pencil ($3.19) in light.
The Chanel makeup artist recommended this product to combat the redness under my lower lash line. The Wonder Pencil is actually a better product because it is customized to my skin tone- the Chanel color is generic. Chanel only offers one shade for brightening.
Once I bought the Wonder pencil, I realized how versatile it is, with the following uses:
1. Defining eyebrow shape- trace your eyebrow with the Wonder Pencil for a defined arch.
2. Covering acne scars and blemishes- I find this is actually better than concealer because the coverage is extremely targeted. Warm the pencil with your fingertips to allow easy application. Then, apply to any sources of redness or discoloration on your skin.
3. Covering under eye redness- apply the Wonder Pencil under the lash line and in the waterline in the same manner you would apply eyeliner.
4. Reverse lip liner- for an extremely defined lip shape, after applying lip liner and before applying lipstick, trace the outside of your lips.
On the left: Lancome CILS Booster XL in travel size ($13). On the right: Chanel La Base Mascara Lash Primer ($33).
Aside from the low price, I recommend travel size mascara because the shorter wand enables more control and it lasts just as long as regular mascara. The Lancome mascara primer outperforms Chanel: lashes are significantly thicker and longer with less clumping than its Chanel peer.
On the left: Chanel Le Volume Revolution de Chanel mascara ($35). On the right: Lancome Hypnoses Drama travel size ($13). The Chanel makeup artist really tried to sell me on Chanel’s revolutionary brush. I honestly hate the Chanel mascara- twenty minutes after application it flaked off. Regardless, in terms of look, Lancome Hypnose Drama produces better results.

Hopefully after reading this post, you will take away some of the techniques I learned from the Chanel makeup artist, along with the cheaper versions of the products to your daily routine.
